لقد ضل حلمي في خليدة ضلة

My wisdom has surely gone astray in a deep delusion

سيكفيك صرب القوم لحم معرض

The people's patience will suffice you

عفا العرض بعدي من سليمى فحائله

My virtue endured after me against Sulaima, so its obstacles

أتهزأ مني أم عمرة أن رأت

Does Umm ‘Amrah mock me when she saw

إذا ما هم أصلحوا أمرهم

When they mend their affairs

أنبئت أن الزبرقان يسبني

I'm told that Zubraqan insults me

والزعفران على ترائبها

Roses and saffron grow on their terraces

تعامس حتى يحسب الناس أنها

He was so just that people thought that if

وسارت إلى يبرين خمسا فأصبحت

She journeyed to Yabrin five days, and so

محبسة في دارة الخرج لم تذق

Imprisoned in outskirts home she did not taste

فأنزلهم دار الضياع فأصبحوا

He brought them down to the abode of loss, so they became

خوامس تنشق العصا عن رؤوسها

The snakes shed their old skins

إذا أفنت أروى عيالك أفنها

When your life has ebbed, water your family, give them drink

وكان لها من حوض سيحان فرصة

And she had from Sihân's basin an opportunity

إذا ذكر الحطيئة لم يعدوا

When Huteiyah is mentioned, they speak

يا عمرو إني قد هويت جماعكم

O Amro, I have fallen in love with your tribe

أرى إبلي حلت دبا بعدما يرى

Into the desert they're led, slowly plodding ahead

لعمر أبيك لا ألقى ابن عم

By your father's life, I will not find a cousin's son

غشيت ليلي دمنة لم تكلم

My night has been shrouded in silence that does not speak

فقلت لها فيئي إليك فإنني

So I said to her, return to me, for I

وقد أنهب المعزى فبرت يمينه

The goats have grazed the pasture bare, his right hand innocent,

وساقطة كور الخمار حيية

With cheeks unveiled and tresses flowing,

وقالوا أخانا لا تضعضع لظالم

They said, "Our brother, do not let an unjust

يا زبرقان أخا بني خلف

O Zabraqan, brother of Bani Khalaf

وإنا أناس تعرف الخيل زجرنا

And we are people whom horses know our battle cries

رأيتك هريت العمامة بعدما

I saw you rush the turban after

وقد تزدري العين الفتى وهو عاقل

Though the eye may scorn the youth of wit so fine

فإن تك نالتنا كلاب بغزة

If we are assailed by the dogs with violence,

ألم تعلمي يا أم عمرة أنني

Did you not know, O mother of Amrah, that I

ألا يا لقومي للرسوم تبيد

Alas, O my people, the customs are perishing,

تدارك حزن بالقنا آل عامر

The sorrow of Āl ʿĀmir was alleviated at Qanāt

أيا شرحي بني أجيال طييء

أتهجر ليلى للفراق حبيبها

إن قشيرا من لقاح ابن حازم

أعرفت من سلمى رسوم ديار

إن اليمامة شر ساكنها

أدوا إلى روح بن حسسان

مددت برحم عند حنظل أبتغي

ذكر الرباب وذكرها سقم

كسوناها من الريط اليماني

أيهلكني شيبان في كل ليلة

ضربوا لأبرهة الأمور محلها

إذا أنت عاديت الرجال فلاقهم

أضلت بنو قيس بن سعد عميدها

وردوا صدور الخيل حتى تنهنهت

لقد شاقني لولا الحياء من الصبا

تحملن من ذات الإزاء كما انبرى

وكنا كريمي معشر جم بيننا

ولما رأت قطمان من عن شمالها

وفي إبل ستين حسب طعينة
