- أبلال إني رابني من شأنكمO Bilal, something in your conduct has aroused my suspicion:
- أترى أنت يابن عمران أجداDo you, O son of Imran, think your fore-
- أخالد لا جزاك الله خيراO Khalid, may God reward you with no good!
- إذا ذات دل كلمته لحاجةWhenever a woman of coy charm spoke to him with a request,
- إذا كلمته ذات دل لحاجة فهمWhenever a coquettish woman speaks to him with a request,
- أشبهت أمك يا بلال لأنهاYou resemble your mother, Bilal, because she
- أعريان مايدري امرؤ سيل عنكمO ʿUryān, a man asked about you cannot tell
- أقول غداة أتانا الخبيرI say, on the morning the news-bearer came to us,
- أقول لمن يسائل عن بلالI say to whoever asks about Bilal
- إن يك عمرو فصيح اللسانIf ʿAmr is eloquent of tongue,
- بكى الخز من إبطي سعيد بن راشدSilken cloth wept because of Saʿīd ibn Rāshid’s armpits,
- بل السراويل من خوف ومن وهلHe wet his pants in fear and panic,
- تقول هشيمة فيما تقولHashaymah says, among other things:
- دعونا الله ذا النعماء لماWe called upon God, Lord of blessings, when
- عصا حكم في الدار أول داخلHakam's staff is the first to enter the house,
- فأما بلال فإن الجذاNow as for Bilal, leprosy indeed
- فتى كان يعمل إصبعيهA youth who used to put his two fingers to work
- فما تسعون تحفزها ثلاثNinety, with three more spurring them on—
- كنت ضيفا ببرمنايا لعبد اللهI was a guest of ʿAbd Allāh in Barmnaya,
- لكل زمان الفتى قد لبسFor every season of a young man's life, I have worn
- لما رأيت الدهر قدWhen I saw how time's
- لما سألت الناس أين المكرمهWhen I asked the people where is the honored one
- محمد يا حكم المسلمينMuhammad, O arbiter of the Muslims,
- وأما بلال فبئس البلالAs for Bilal, what a wretched Bilal!
- وجئت على قصواء تنقل سوءةAnd you came riding Qaṣwāʾ, carrying a disgrace
- وغدت بجيلة نحو خالد تبتغيAnd Bajīlah set out toward Khālid in the morning, seeking
