إنif يَكُis عَمروٌʿAmr فصِيحَeloquent اللِّسَانِthe tongue
إن يَكُ عَمروٌ فصِيحَ اللِّسَانِ
خَطِيباًan orator فَإِنَّthen indeed استَهُhis arse تَلحَنُspeaks ungrammatically
خَطِيباً فَإِنَّ استَهُ تَلحَنُ
If ʿAmr is eloquent of tongue,
If Amr is eloquent of tongue
an orator, his arse nevertheless speaks ungrammatically.
As an orator, his eloquence sometimes fails
عَلَيكَyou should use بِسُكٍّwith sukk perfume ورُمَّانَةٍand a pomegranate
عَلَيكَ بِسُكٍّ ورُمَّانَةٍ
ومِلحٍand salt يُدَقُّis pounded ولاand not يُطحَنُis ground
ومِلحٍ يُدَقُّ ولا يُطحَنُ
Take sukk perfume and a pomegranate,
Stick to vegetables and pomegranates
and salt that is pounded, not ground.
And salt that is pounded, not ground
عليكyou should use بحِلتِيتِwith asafoetida كِرمَانَKirmān والنَّانَخَاةِand ajwain
عليك بحِلتِيتِ كِرمَانَ والنَّانَخَاةِ
وَثومٍand garlic يُسَخَّنُis heated فيin مِدهنُan oil pot
وَثومٍ يُسَخَّنُ في مِدهنُ
Take asafoetida from Kirmān and ajwain,
Stick to my two gardens of fig and carob
and garlic heated in an oil pot.
