- اذهب فلا يبعدنك الله من رجلGo—may God never banish you—what a man you were:
- ألا أبلغا عني عليا تحيةListen, you two: convey a greeting from me to Ali.
- ألا رب نهب قد حويت وغارةLo, many a spoil you have seized, and many a raid
- ألا هل أتاها أن بالري معشراAh, has word reached her that at Rayy a company of men
- بنو تميم عتاد الحرب قد علمواThe sons of Tamim are war's armament, as is well known,
- جزى الله خيرا من قبيل وناصرMay God reward well that tribe and ally—
- دعانا إلى جرجان والري دونهاWe were called to Jurjan, with Rayy lying before it,
- فنحن لعمري غير شك قرارناSo we—by my life, beyond all doubt—our settled stand
- قومي أسيدان سألت ومعدنMy people are Usayd, if you ask, and a mine;
- لا تجد بالعطاء في غير حقDo not bestow gifts where they are not rightfully due.
- لألوت بني العنقاء من رأس حالقHad my people been abject in war,
- لقد علمت فتيان عمرو بأننيThe young men of Amr have surely learned that I
- نحن صبحنا يوم دجلة أهلهاWe assailed its people at dawn on the day of the Tigris,
- وأسلنا على المدائن خيلاEnglish translation unavailable
- وبالري إن مالت بنا أم جعفرAnd at Rayy, if Umm Jaʿfar veered with us,
- وسائل بني الماهات عنا وعنهمAnd ask Banu al-Mahat about us and about them:
- وقال القضاة من معد وغيرهاAnd the judges of Maʿadd and others said:
- وكم قد تركنا في دمشق وأرضهاAnd how many we have left in Damascus and its land—
- ولو أن قومي في الحروب أذلةAnd had my people been humbled in war,
- ونحن قتلنا يزد جرد ببعجةAnd we killed Yazdegerd with a piercing stab
