أَلاAh! هَلhas? أَتاهاreached her أَنthat بِالرَيِّat Rayy مَعشَراًa company of men
أَلا هَل أَتاها أَن بِالرَيِّ مَعشَراً
شَعواthey assailed مَنعَماًManʿam لَمّاwhen اِستَجاشواthey summoned troops وَقَنبَلواand formed companies
شَعوا مَنعَماً لَمّا اِستَجاشوا وَقَنبَلوا
Ah, has word reached her that at Rayy a company of men
Assailed Manʿam when they summoned troops and formed companies?
لَهُمthey had مَوطِنانِtwo battlefields عايَنواthey witnessed الهُلكَdestruction فيهِماin both of them
لَهُم مَوطِنانِ عايَنوا الهُلكَ فيهِما
بِأَيدٍby hands طِوالٍlong-reaching لَمdid not يَخُنهُنَّbetray them مفصلُa joint
بِأَيدٍ طِوالٍ لَم يَخُنهُنَّ مفصلُ
They had two battlefields where they witnessed destruction,
By long-reaching hands that no joint betrayed,
وَخَيلٍand horses تُعاديracing one another لاno هُوادَةَrespite بَينَهاamong them
وَخَيلٍ تُعادي لا هُوادَةَ بَينَها
وِرادٌbay horses وَكُمتٌand dark-bay horses تَمتَطيyou ride وَمُحَجَّلُand a white-socked horse
وِرادٌ وَكُمتٌ تَمتَطي وَمُحَجَّلُ
And by horses racing one another, with no respite among them—
Bays and dark bays you ride, and white-socked steeds,
وَدُهمand black horses وَشقرand chestnut horses تَنشُدُyou seek البهمَthe unmarked horses بَينَهاamong them
وَدُهم وَشقر تَنشُدُ البهمَ بَينَها
إِذاwhenever ناصَبَتthey confronted قَوماa people تَوَلّواthey turned away وَأَوصَلواand fled on
إِذا ناصَبَت قَوما تَوَلّوا وَأَوصَلوا
And blacks and chestnuts; you seek the unmarked among them.
Whenever they confronted a people, those people turned and fled on.
قَتَلناهُمwe killed them بِالرَيِّat Rayy مَثنىًin pairs وَموحِداًand singly
قَتَلناهُم بِالرَيِّ مَثنىً وَموحِداً
وَصارَand became لَناours فيهاin it قُرّادٌqurrād (unclear in this text) وَمَأكَلُand food
وَصارَ لَنا فيها قُرّادٌ وَمَأكَلُ
We killed them at Rayy, in pairs and singly,
And there qurrād [unclear in the text] and food became ours.
قَتَلناwe killed سَبأSabaʾ وَحشٍWahsh وَمَنand whoever مالَinclined مَيلهُhis way
قَتَلنا سَبأ وَحشٍ وَمَن مالَ مَيلهُ
وَلَمand did not يَنجُescape مِنهُمof them بِالسُفوحِin the foothills مُؤَمَّلُone in whom hope was placed
وَلَم يَنجُ مِنهُم بِالسُفوحِ مُؤَمَّلُ
We killed Sabaʾ Wahsh and whoever took his side,
And no one they pinned their hopes on escaped in the foothills.
جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod خَيراًwith good مَعشَراًa company of men عَصَبوهُمُthey hemmed them in
جَزى اللَهُ خَيراً مَعشَراً عَصَبوهُمُ
وَاَعطاهُمand grant them خَيرَthe finest العَطاءِbounty الَّذيthat يَبلواHe bestows
وَاَعطاهُم خَيرَ العَطاءِ الَّذي يَبلوا
May God reward well the men who hemmed them in,
And grant them the finest bounty He bestows.
