    And at Rayy, if Umm Jaʿfar veered with us,

    We steadied the horses' breasts while the horses shied.

    Whenever a firebrand warns the peoples against them,

    A supple, bright-faced man plunges him into death—

    A brother of battle and coats of mail: if it roars at him,

    He settles beside it, steadfast as it roars.

    وَفينا البَقايا وَالفِعالُ المُشَهَّرُ

    Then he kindles war on our behalf after its onrush;

    And among us are the survivors and renowned deeds.

    We slew the sons of Bahrām when they followed one another

    At their misleader's command, while the bracelet-wearer was absent.

    لَها في سَوادِ السَفحِ مَثوىً وَمَحشَرُ

    And on the slope are fools whose vultures do not fly;

    In the slope's dark expanse they have a resting place and gathering ground.

    But for the people's seeking safety through peace, desolate would lie

    Their lands—or they would flee and be excused.

    We took their place at Rayy, and Rayy is an abode

    With a rugged, perilous flank there.
