وَنَحنُand we قَتَلناwe killed يَزدYazd (part of Yazdegerd) جَردٍJird (part of Yazdegerd) بِبَعجَةٍwith a piercing stab
مِنَof الرُعبِterror إِذwhen وَلّىhe turned away الفِرارَflight وَغاراand he vanished
And we killed Yazdegerd with a piercing stab
And we killed Yazd the coward in the morning
of terror, when he turned to flee and vanished.
When he turned in flight and hid away in fear
غَداةَon the morning لَقيناهُمwe met them بِمُروٍّat Merv تَخالُهُمyou imagine them
The morning we met them at Merv, you would think them
The next day we met them in Muroo while they deemed
shaggy leopards upon those mountains.
Themselves like tigers on those mountains and plains
قَتَلناهُمwe killed them فيin حَربَةٍa spear طَحَنَتit ground down بِهِمupon them
غَداةَon the morning الرَزيقِal-Raziq إِذwhen أَرادَhe wanted حِواراa parley
We killed them in a spear-fight that ground them down,
We killed them in a battle that ground them down
on the morning at al-Raziq, when he sought a parley.
The next day at breakfast when they wanted talk
ضَمَمناwe closed in عَلَيهِمupon them جانِبيهِمtheir two flanks بِصادِقٍwith unerring thrusts
مِنَof الطَعنِspear-thrusting ماas long as دامَremained النَهارُthe day نَهاراdaylight
We hemmed them in on both flanks with unerring
We pressed on their flanks with true thrust of spears
spear-thrusts, as long as daylight remained daylight.
As long as daylight lasted, all day long
فَوَاللَهِso, by God لَولاwere it not for اللَهGod لاno شَيءَthing غَيرَهُother than Him
لَغادَتit would surely have come at dawn عَلَيهِمupon them بِالرَزيقِat al-Raziq بَواراruin
So, by God, were it not for God—nothing but Him—
By God, were it not for God and none but Him
it would have come upon them at al-Raziq at dawn, bringing ruin.
They would have perished by fate at breakfast time
