The young men of Amr have surely learned that I
Surely the youths of 'Amr have known that I
Guard all that is mine to defend through the longest months.
Keep my weapons sharp through the long months,
وَإِنand if فاتَslipped away أَمرٌa matter قَدَّمونيthey put me forward فَرُمتُهُso I pursued it

And if a matter slips away, they put me forward, and I pursue it,
And if I miss a chance when offered, I turn it
To repel assailants amid one of the upheavals.
Aside with a glancing blow at the moment of onslaught.
وَإِنّيand indeed I أَرُدُّI turn back الكَيشَunclear as written عَنaway from سُنَنِthe paths of الهَوىdesire
وَيَرجِعُand returns رُمحيmy spear بَعدafterward رَيّانُsated ناهِلِhaving drunk
And I turn back the [unclear: kaysh] from desire's paths,
And verily I repel wantonness far from the path of passion
And afterward my spear returns sated, having drunk its fill.
And my spear returns to the sheath after blood-licking.
فَمَنso whoever يَكُmay be خَوّارَweak اليَدَينِin both hands فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I

Whoever may be weak of hand, I, for my part,
So let him who is given to biting his hands beware of me
When she bares her fang, am no laggard.
When she bares her fangs, no malice in her lacking.
وَيَومَand on the day of نَهاوَندٍNahawand شَدَوتُI sang فَلَمand did not أَحمِI protect

And on the day of Nahawand I sang and offered no protection,
And on the day of Naḥāwand I plied them unsparingly, and there
And all the tribes had done well against them.
Did the whole of the tribes acquit themselves nobly.

On the evening when al-Fayruzan fled, seeking refuge
In the evening the Daylamite turned in flight
Toward Mount Ab, fearing the foot soldiers.
To the hill of Āb, fearful of being trapped.
فَأَدرَكَهُthen he overtook him مِنّاfrom among us أَخوa man of الهَيجِbattle وَالنَدىand bounty

Then a man of battle and bounty from among us overtook him,
There my brother in dash and onslaught came up with him
And hurled him down amid the crowding of laden beasts.
And unhorsed him at the moment of the encounter.

And their remains lie in [unclear: wa'y Khurd],
And their remnants are in every valley, dwelling place fixed,
Their souls are the dusky, loping wolves.
While their souls are the souls of ravening wolves.
وَنَحنُand we وَليناwe undertook كُلَّevery يَومٍday لَفارِسٍfor Persia

And every day against Persia we undertook
And daily we at each dawn to a horseman
Butting and gouging with full-grown horns.
Deal blows and receive them, stout lances charges.
