- لنا خليل له خلالWe have a close friend with traits
- لي صديق غدا وإن كان لاينطقI have a friend who has become—though he does not
- ناديت وهو الشمس في شهرةI called out—he was the sun in renown,
- هاتيك يا صاح ربا لعلعThose, my friend, are the hills of La‘la‘.
- هنأت من أهواه عند ختانهI congratulated the one I love at his circumcision,
- هواك يا من له اختيالMy love for you, O you of haughty bearing—
- وكنا خمس عشرة في التئامAnd we were ‘fifteen,’ joined together,
- ومهفهف عني الزمان بخدهThe time has wrinkled my eye
