- أبا حسن طال انتظار عصابةO Abu Hasan, a company has waited long,
- إذا رمت في الدنيا تعيش مهنئاIf you wish to live happily in this world,
- اذهب إلى معهد التدريس واجتهدGo to the teaching institute and apply yourself.
- أسفا عليك لقد اضعت بما مضىAlas for you! In days gone by, you have squandered
- العقل يوجب والشريعة تحكمReason enjoins, and sacred law decrees:
- المرء يشرف بالآداب حيث يرىA man is ennobled by refinement when he sees
- أيا ابن زهير لست أعطيك بعدهاO son of Zuhayr, after this I shall no longer give you
- تالله ان الذي قد جال في خلديBy God, what has passed through my mind
- تخير والدي وضي باحدىMy father chose to place me in one of the
- جزاك ربي علَى ما قلت صالحةMay my Lord grant you a good reward for what you said,
- سل ما تميل له تجدAsk about whatever interests you; you will find
- سلني الذي شئت يا ذا الفضل والأدبAsk me what you wish, O you of merit and refinement,
- سمعا لأمرك إذ صدرI heed your command the moment it is issued,
- علي اوجبتموا شكرا لما نسجتYou have obliged me to give thanks for what was woven
- عهدي بودك اننيMy experience of your affection is that,
- لئن أخنى الزمان على عكاظThough time has brought ruin upon Ukaz,
- من وقتها قد تركت العلم حيث رأتSince then I have forsaken learning, having seen
- نعم الوليد لعمر الله أنت إذاWhat a fine son you are, by God's life, when
- وشكرت ما أوليتني ونشرتهAnd I gave thanks for what you bestowed on me and made it known
- يا شعب إن بلغت أبنآء موطنناO people, if the sons of our homeland have attained
- يا صاحبي دعاني من دجى الجدلO my two friends, spare me the darkness of disputation.
- يا قبلة نلتها على دهشO kiss I won in a daze,
