O kiss I won in a daze,
O kiss I attained in bewilderment
From one slender, coy, and coquettish!
From one with swaying, delicate branches

والوَردُ توريدُ خَدِّه الضَّرج
The coquetry of his eye has bewildered the fawn,
Whose twisting branches confused the twigs
And the rose is the rosy flush of his crimson cheek.
And the roses pinked his blushing cheeks

When he sways or stands upright,
When he bent or stood upright
The bough says to him, "You are in trouble."
The branch said to him, you are in distress

Beauty has divided your two eyes, Abu al-Qa-
Beauty divided your twisting, O Abu Al-Qasim
sim, between languor and deep blackness.
Between languor and sprightliness

Tell them both to be gentle with a youth's heart,
Tell them both to be gentle with the heart of a youth
Whose entrails you have folded around a blaze.
Whose insides you folded in ardor

For from them—may you never lose their cruelty—
Without their darkness I'd lack their sickness
Comes my heart's sickness, and from them my relief.
The malady of my heart and through them my remedy
