يقول أناس إشرب الخمر إنها

Woe unto every slanderer and backbiter

رأيت الخمر صالحة وفيها

I saw the wine wholesome, though in it

إن كانت الخمر قد عزت وقد منعت

If wine has become dear and forbidden

يا عين بكي أبا جبر ووالده

O eye shed tears for Abu Jabir and his father

ولقد نظرت إلى الشموس ودونها

I have gazed upon the suns and below them

صاحبا سوء صحبتهما

Two friends of ill-repute befriended me

إن الكرام على الجياد مقيلهم

The generous are carried by their steeds

أتوب إِلى الله الرحيم فإنه

I repent to Allah the Merciful, for He

إذا مت فادفني إلى جنب كرمة

If I die, bury me beside a vineyard

كفى حزنا أن تطعن الخيل بالقنا

Enough is the sorrow that horses are stabbed with spears

ألم تسل الفوارس من سليم

Did you not ask the horsemen about Sulaym

ألم تر أن الدهر يعثر بالفتى

Do you not see how fate trips up the youth,

لقد علمت ثقيف غير فخر

Thaqif has learned, though not with boastful pride,

الحمد لله نجاني وخلصني

Praise be to God who saved me and delivered me

ألم ترني ودعت ما كنت أشرب

لا تسألي الناس عن مالي وكثرته

أنى تسدت نحونا أم يوسف

ألا سقني يا صاح خمرافإنني

إذا مت فادفني إلى أصل كرمة

عمي الذي أهدى لكسرى جياده

إني وما صاحت يهود وطربت

تمنيت أن ألقاهما وتمنتا
