صيفي الأسلت

وقد لاح في الصبح الثريا كما ترى

And there appeared at dawn Sirius, as you see,

ألا من مبلغ حسان عني

Oh teller convey from me

وأحرزنا المغانم واسقبحنا

We have won the spoils and disgraced

فمن ورث الغنى فليصطنعه

He who inherits wealth, let him use it properly

أسرت مخلدا فعفوت عنه

I captured a prisoner and pardoned him

قالت ولم تقصد لقيل الخنا

She spoke without intending to meet me

رجموا بالغيب كيما يعلموا

Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing from me to you.

بنى متى هلكت وأنت حي

When you pass away though you are alive,

أقيس إن هلكت وأنت حي

Even if I perish and you live on,

على أن قد فجعت بذي حفاظ

Though you have saddened me with loss

نحن بما عندنا وأنت بما

We have what we have, and you have what you have

لقد رأيت بني عمرو فما وهنوا

I saw the sons of Amr, they did not falter

من يصل نارى بلا ذنب ولا ترة

Whoever connects with my fire without sin or blame

أيا راكبا إما عرضت فبلغن

O rider, if you pass by, convey

غراس كالفتائن مغرضات

Plants like pretty women

فلست لحاصن إن لم ترونا

We are not fortresses if you do not see us

ومن صنعه يوم فيل الحبوش

And of His doing on the day Al-Fil were let loose

أرب الناس أشياء ألمت

People have afflicted me with many woes

لأكناف الجريب فنعف سلمى

The flanks of the nearby hill are covered in flowers,

وكان أبو أحيحة قد علمتم

Abu Uhayha had learned in Mecca

سبحوا الله شرق كل صباح

Glorify God at every dawn in the east

رقود الضحى صفر الحشى منتهى المنى

إذا جمادى منعت قطرها

أبلغ أبا حصن وبعض
