ألا ربما صار البغيض مصافيا
Alas! Perhaps the hateful becomes friendly,
جنى السفيه جنايات فحل بمن
The fool committed crimes, so their punishment befell those
إن التعمق ظلمة ولقلما
To dwell in thought is darkness, and seldom
إذا ما نال ذو طلب نجاحا
When one who seeks finds triumph at last
والنجم أقرب من سري إذا اشتملت
The star is closer to my secret when
يا نفس إن سبيل الرشد واضحة
O soul, the path of righteousness is clear
يخادع ريب الدهر عن نفسه الفتى
My friend, do not let this fleeting world deceive you
إن الترقق للمقيم موافق وإذا
Kindness suits one staying home;
رب امرئ متيقن
Many times misfortune conquers a man's certainty
أخلقت جدتي وبان شبابي
Roses are red, violets are blue
والعلم يشفى إذا اشتف الجهول به
When ignorance is healed by knowledge
فلم ينج منهم في البحور ملجج
No one escaped in the turbulent seas
خذه بموت يغتنم عندها الحمى
Take it with a death that fever welcomes
فررت من قطر إلى مثعب
I fled from a drop to a downpour
لا در در معشر أنجاس
No good comes from the companionship of vile men.
إذا الواشي بغى يوما صديقا
If the slanderer one day seeks a friend
فلا تخبر بسرك كل سر
Do not disclose your secret to every confidant
جنى الضغائن آباء لنا سلفوا
Our forefathers harvested hostilities
إذا زجرت لجوجا زدته علقا
If you rebuke a stubborn man, you only add fuel to the flames,
لا تغرين لجوجا حين تزجره
Do not tempt the stubborn one when you rebuke him
لا تظهرن لذي جهل معاتبة
Do not show resentment to the ignorant
موت التقي حياة لا انقطاع لها
Alive is the righteous though death come their way
قد ينفع الأدب الأحداث في مهل
Poetry may help the weak at due leisure -
سبق القضاء بكل ما هو كائن
Fate has decreed all that will come to pass
العلم والحلم حلتان هما
Knowledge and forbearance are two robes
إذا ما كنت طالب كل ذنب
If you seek every fault
وكيف يأمن ريب الدهر مرتهن
How can one feel secure from the vicissitudes of Time
وللموت تغذو الوالدات سخالها
Mothers feed Death their babies
الكلب لا يذكر في مجلس
The dog is not mentioned in an assembly
وإن جاء ما لا تستطيعان دفعه
And if what you cannot prevent comes your way
تعاون على الخيرات تظفر ولا تكن
Cooperate in doing good, you will succeed; do not be
لسانك للدنيا عدو مشاحن
Your tongue is hostile to this world full of strife
بورك في عون وفي أعوانه
Blessings abound for Awun, his men,
حصادك يوما ما زرعت وإنما
وكم من صحيح بات للموت آمنا
إن عبت يوما على قوم بعاقبة
إذا عبت أمرا فلا تأته
جمعنا لها أكلا وذما بألسن
رأيت الشر تحقره فينمى
باسم الذي أنزلت من عنده السور
العلم ينعش أقواما فينفعهم
وإذا حملت إلى سفيه حكمة
إن الترقق للمقيم موافق
تأوينى هم كثير بلابله
قد قيل قبلي في الكلام الأقدم
وفي البحث قدما والسؤال لذي العمى
سبقت يداك له بعاجل طعنة
إذا أنت لم ترحل بزاد من التقى
وقور وما في قلبه قلق الصبا
النفس تكلف بالدنيا وقد علمت
