عهدي بودك انني

My promise to you is that

إذا رمت في الدنيا تعيش مهنئا

If you wish to live gloriously in this world

سل ما تميل له تجد

Ask what you wish, you will find

من وقتها قد تركت العلم حيث رأت

Since then I have abandoned knowledge, for my eyes have seen

سلني الذي شئت يا ذا الفضل والأدب

Ask me what you wish, O you of merit and refinement,

المرء يشرف بالآداب حيث يرى

A man is honored through his manners when he views

يا شعب إن بلغت أبنآء موطننا

O people, if the children of our homeland

جزاك ربي علَى ما قلت صالحة

May God reward you for what you have said that is good

اذهب إلى معهد التدريس واجتهد

Go to the teaching institute and strive

علي اوجبتموا شكرا لما نسجت

You have obliged me with gratitude for what you have woven

يا قبلة نلتها على دهش

O kiss I attained in bewilderment

تالله ان الذي قد جال في خلدي

By God, what roams in my mind

أيا ابن زهير لست أعطيك بعدها

O son of Zuhair, after this I will not

سمعا لأمرك إذ صدر

I heed your command, it came

أسفا عليك لقد اضعت بما مضى

I apologize for wasting time gone by

يا صاحبي دعاني من دجى الجدل

My friend called me from the darkness of dispute

نعم الوليد لعمر الله أنت إذا

O Waleed, by the life of God you are

أبا حسن طال انتظار عصابة

O Abu Hasan, long has been the wait of the comrades

وشكرت ما أوليتني ونشرته

تخير والدي وضي باحدى

العقل يوجب والشريعة تحكم

لئن أخنى الزمان على عكاظ
