- إذا أرملوا زادا عقرتُ مطيةًWhen they ran out of provisions, I hamstrung a riding camel,
- إذا أسهلت خبت وإن أحزنت مشتWhen she reaches level ground, she trots; and when she reaches rough ground, she walks.
- ألا عتبت علي فصارمتنيAh, she reproached me and broke with me.
- ألم خيال من أمية بالركبA phantom of Umayya visited the caravan,
- أمعتقلي ريب المنون ولم أرعAm I imprisoned by the doubt of death, and I did not quake

- بكى صُرد لما رأى الحي أعرضتṢurad wept when he saw the tribe; there stretched
- تحُذرني كي أحذر العام خثعماYou warn me to beware the year, tough and ruthless
- دماءُ ثلاثةٍ أردت قناتيThe blood of three laid my spear low,
- سمعتُ بجمعهم فرضختُ فيهمI heard of their gathering, so I struck at them
- كأن قوائم النحام لماIt was as though al-Nahham’s legs, when
- كأن مفالق الهامات منهُمAs though their split skulls
- لعمرُ أبيك والأنباء تُنمىBy your father's life—and tidings are passed on—
- من مُبلغ جذمي بأني مقتولWho will tell my clan that I am slain?
- وأذعر كلاباً يقود كلابهAnd I frighten a dog-handler leading his dogs;
- وعاشية راحت بطاناً ذعُرتهاAnd an evening-grazing herd, returning full-bellied, I startled
- يُكذبُني العمران عمرُو بنُ جندبٍThe two Amrs call me a liar—Amr son of Jandab,
