- أأنبز مجنونا إذا جدت بالذيAm I branded mad if I give generously of what
- ألا لا أبالي في العلى ما أصابنيIndeed, I care not what befalls me in pursuit of glory,

- حبى لإغناء سوار يجشمنيMy desire to make Sawwar wealthy compels me
- طاف الخيال ولات حين تطربThe vision came by, though it was no time for rapture,
- عدوت إلى المري عدوة فاتكI rushed to the impudent man with the pace of a quick runner
- عيرتني نائل السلطان اطلبهYou reproached me for seeking the sultan's bounty.
- فمن كان لم يسمع عجيبا فإننيWhoever has never heard a marvel—indeed, I
- لا خير في العيش قول ذي نصحThere is no good in life, as a sincere adviser says,
- ما بال سعدى أخلفت ميعاديWhy has Suʿdā failed to keep her tryst with me
- وردت دار سعيد وهي خاليةI came to Sa'id's house, and it was empty.
