تَلومُTalum جوديpour forth your tears لِبُرمَةِfor the cooking pot of الطَفشيلِthe tafshil stew
وَاِستَهِلّيand wail aloud فَالصَبرُfor patience غَيرُnot جَميلُfitting
Talum, pour out your tears for the pot of tafshil,
You blame me for being bored
and wail aloud, for patience is not fitting.
And start complaining, though patience is better
فَجَعَتنيbereaved me بِهاof it يَدٌa hand لَمdid not تَدَعleave لِلذَرِّfor the tiny ants
فيin صَحنِthe hollow of قِدرِهاits pot مِنany مَقيلِresting place
A hand bereaved me of it, leaving not even for the tiny ants
It was made by a hand that left nothing
a resting place in the hollow of its pot.
In its pot from greens
كانَwas وَاللَهِby God لَحمُهاits meat مِنfrom فَصيلٍa weaned camel calf
رائِعٍsplendid يَرتَعيgrazing on كَريمَthe choicest البُقولِgreens
By God, its meat came from a weaned camel calf,
By Allah, its meat was from a magnificent breed
a splendid one, grazing on the choicest greens.
Grazing on the finest legumes
فَخَلَطناthen we mixed بِلَحمِهِwith its meat عَدَسَlentils of الشامِal-Sham
إِلىalong with حِمِّصٍchickpeas لَناof ours مَبلولِsoaked
Then we mixed lentils from al-Sham with its meat,
We mixed with its meat chickpeas from Damascus
along with some soaked chickpeas of ours.
With peppers we soaked
فَأَتَتناthen it came to us كَأَنَّهاas though it were رَوضَةٌa meadow بِالحَزنِon rugged upland
تَدعوcalling الجيرانَthe neighbors لِلتَطفيلِto dine uninvited
It came to us like a meadow on rugged upland,
It came to us like a garden full of sorrow
calling the neighbors to dine uninvited.
Calling the neighbors over to feast
ثُمَّthen أَكفَأتُI upturned فَوقَهاover it جَفنَةَthe great bowl of الحَيِّthe clan
وَعَلَّقتُand I hung صَحفَتيmy dish فيin زَبيلِa basket
Then I upturned the clan’s great bowl over it,
Then I covered it with hay from the living
and hung my dish in a basket.
And hung my bag on a bucket
فَمَنىthen destined اللَهُGod ليfor me بِفَظٍّa rude man غَليظٍcoarse
ماnot أَراهُI think he يُقِرُّacknowledges بِالتَنزيلِthe Revelation
Then God sent my way a rude, coarse man;
So God protected me with a strong rebuke
I do not think he acknowledges the Revelation.
I don’t think settles with reciting verses
فَاِنتَحىso he set to دائِباًunceasingly يُدَبِّلُforming large mouthfuls مِنهاfrom it
قُلتُI said إِنَّindeed الثَريدَtharid, a bread-and-broth dish لِلتَدبيلِfor forming large mouthfuls
He set to tirelessly, forming great mouthfuls from it.
He kept retracting, slowly cooking it
I said, “Tharid is meant for making great mouthfuls.”
I said stewing is for cooking
فَتَغَنّىthen he sang صَوتاًa song لِيوضِحَto make clear عِنديto me
Then he sang a song to make things clear to me:
Then he sang loudly to make clear to me
“Greet Umm al-Ala before departing.”
The voice of Umm Al-Ala before leaving
