ماwhat بالُis the matter with سُعدىSuʿdā أَخلَفَتshe failed to keep ميعاديmy tryst
وَتَيَسرَتand she readied herself لِقَطيعَتيto sever ties with me وَبِعاديand to shun me
Why has Suʿdā failed to keep her tryst with me
And readied herself to sever ties and shun me?
أَسُعادُO Suʿād هَلis there ذَنبٌany fault سَوىother than أَنّيthat I am اِمرُؤٌa man
شَغَلَتhas occupied مَحَبَّتُكُمlove for you عَلَيَّto my detriment فُؤاديmy heart
O Suʿād, is there any fault except that I am a man
Whose heart love for you has wholly occupied?
وَلَقَدand indeed دَنَوتِyou drew near وَكُنتِand you were غَيرَnot بَخيلَةٍstingy
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen أَطمَعتُI raised hopes فيin الميعادِthe tryst
You had indeed drawn near and were not ungenerous,
Until, when I had raised hopes of the tryst,
بَرَقَتgleamed بَوارِقُflashes of lightning مِنfrom نَوالِكَyour bounty خُلَّبٌrainless
كَذِبُlies العُداةِof foes صَواعِقُthunderbolts الإيعادِof menace
Flashes of your bounty gleamed, but brought no rain—
Lies of foes, thunderbolts of menace.
