أَأُنبَزُAm I branded مَجنوناًmad إِذاif جُدتُI give generously بِالَّذيof what
مَلَكتُI possess وَإِنand if دافَعتُI defend عَنهُon its behalf فَعاقِلُthen I am sensible
Am I branded mad if I give generously of what
I possess, yet sensible if I guard it?
فَدامواso may they persist عَلىin الزَورِfalsehood الَّذيwhich قُرِفواthey were accused بِهِof it

So let them persist in the falsehood they are accused of,
And let me keep giving as long as a petitioner comes.
أَبَيتُI refuse وَتَأبىand refuse ليon my behalf رَجالٌmen أَشِحَّةٌjealously protective

I refuse, and men refuse on my behalf—men fiercely protective
Of glory, whom Tamim and Wa'il claim as their descendants.
