إِلَيكَto you اِبنَO son of موسىMusa الجودِgenerosity أَعمَلتُI urged onward ناقَتيmy she-camel
مُجَلَّلَةًdraped يَضفوhangs loosely عَلَيهاover her جِلالُهاher coverings
To you, son of Musa the Generous, I urged my she-camel onward,
To you, son of generous Musa, I adorned my she-camel
Draped, her coverings hanging loosely over her.
Bedecked, his majesty sheds light upon her
كَتومُconcealing الوَجىfoot soreness لاnot تَشتَكيshe complains of أَلَمَthe pain of السُرىnight travel
سَواءٌalike عَلَيهاto her مَوتُهاher death وَاِعتِلالُهاand her illness
She conceals her footsoreness, never complaining of the pain of night travel;
Silent in distress, she does not complain of the hardship of travel
Her death and her illness are alike to her.
It's all the same to her, whether she lives or ails
إِذاwhen شَرِبَتshe drinks أَبصَرَتI see ماwhat جَوفُinside بَطنِهاher belly
وَإِنand if ظَمِئَتshe thirsts لَمnot يَبدُshows مِنهاin her هُزالُهاher gauntness
When she drinks, I see what is inside her belly;
When she drinks, she sees the inside of her stomach
And if she thirsts, no gauntness shows in her.
And when thirsty, no emaciation shows in her
وَإِنand if حَمَلَتshe carries حِملاًa load تَكَلَّفتُI take on حِملَهاher burden
وَإِنand if حُطَّis taken off عَنهاfrom her لَمnot أَقُلI say كَيفَhow حالُهاher condition
And if she carries a load, I take on her burden;
If I load her, I take care of her burden
And if it is taken off her, I do not say, 'How is she?'
And if unloaded, I don't ask how her condition is
بَعَثناwe sent بِهاher off تَسموrise العُيونُthe eyes وَراءَهاbehind her
إِلَيكَto you وَماand not يُخشىis feared عَلَيهاfor her كَلالُهاher exhaustion
We sent her off, eyes rising in her wake,
We sent her, eyes follow her in wonder
To you, with no fear that she would tire.
To you, and no fatigue is feared for her
وَغَنّىand sang مُغَنِّياًa singer بَصِوتٍin a voice فَشاقَنيso stirred my longing
مَتىwhen راجِعٌreturning مِنfrom أُمِّUmm (mother of) عَمرٍوAmr خَيالُهاher phantom
And a singer sang in a voice that stirred my longing:
A singer sang, his voice hurt me
'When will the phantom of Umm Amr return?'
When will the phantom of Umm Amr return?

And why should I not wish a tribe to endure,
Why wouldn't I love the survival of a tribe
With your father its full moon, and you its crescent?
Whose full moon is your father, and you its crescent?
