أصف المودة من صفا لك وده

Describe the affection of one whose love for you is pure

وإني حنى ظهري خطوب تتابعت

And my back is bent by sorrows following each other,

ظل وظلت حوله صيما

He tarried, shadows clustered 'round

تصل السيوف إذا قصرن بخطونا

The swords join when they fall short of our steps,

أصبح ربي في الأمر يرشدني

My Lord guides me in my affairs

أما ترى لمتي لاح المشيب بها

Don't you see how soon old age has shone in it

أمن آل هند عرفت الرسوما

From the clan of Hind did I learn their ways

جعلن عتيق أنماط خدورا

They made ancient patterns into escorts

يا دار أسماء بالأمثال فالرجل

O house of Asma, exemplified in proverbs, and the man

لمن الديار كأن لم تحلل

For whom are the homes as if they were never inhabited

يا من لعذالة لومي مجتها

O you who blame me for squandering,

واعرض واسط فعدلن عنه

He turned away an intermediary, so we turned from him

وللموت خير من تخشع ذي الحجى

Death is better than abasing oneself before the froward

ألا ضرمت مودتك الرواع

Alas! Your affection has blazed up and separation and farewell have come between us.

وآل مزيقياء وقد تداعت

The kin of Muzayqi'a collapsed

بانت سعاد فأمسى القلب معمودا

Happiness appeared, so my heart is saturated,

أخوك أخوك من يدنو وترجو

Your brother, your brother, whoever draws near

إن عاما صرت فيه أميرا

حتى أفيء بها تدمي مناسمها

تذكرت والذكرى تهيجك زينبا

ومشيت باليد قبل رجلي خطوها

كفاني أبو الأشوس المنكرات

أعجرد إني من أماني باطل
