أبلغ الحارث عني أنني

Tell Al-Harith from me that I

تمنى حميد أن يلاقي قرحتي

Humeid wished that he would meet my wounds

مهلا دريد عن التسرع إنني

Slow down, Darid, from hastiness, I am not

تركت ابن الحريز على ذمام

رأتني صريع الخمر يوماً فسؤتها

She saw me once drunk and lying down, so she rebuked me,

إلى روض به نفل وبقل

To a garden where basil and beans grow

إذا الهشم الفه اشترى ببناته

If the profligate spendthrift sold his daughters

أبيت لنفسي الخسف لما رضوا به

I refused ruin for myself when they were content with it

ألا أبلغ سراقة يا ابن مال

O son of wealth, convey my message true

ومغير حجر قد جررت برجله

And a stone that has been dragged by his leg

إما تريني اليوم من لحمي الضبع

Today you will see me as a fierce lion

فلكم هريرة ماتجف دموعها

For how long will the tears flow

جزى الله ابن عروة حين أمسى

May God reward Ibn 'Urwa when evening came

يبكى علينا ولا نبكي على أحد

They weep for us, yet we weep for none,

دعوت أبا ليلى إلى السلم كي يرى

I called Abu Layla to make peace so he may see

أيوعدني أبو ليلى طفيل

Does Abu Layla promise me a visit,

لعمرك ما ليث وإن كنت منهم

By your life, though you are one of them, you are no lion

ألا آذنتنا من تدللها ملس

Alas! Her coquetry has given us leave,

وفارس في غمار الموت منغمس

A knight immersed in the turmoil of death,

حملت عليه الوَرد حتى تركته

معي كل مسترخي الإزار كأنه

وإني لأقري الهم حين يضيفني

وكنتم مثل شاة السوء ظلت

كالرأس مرتفع فيه مشاعره

لسان الفتى نصف ونصف فؤاده
