1. Alas! Her coquetry has given us leave,
And she said, "Between you and me there is no intimacy."

2. And she said, "Do not strive to regain what is past,
And do not be destroyed by sorrow and melancholy."

3. Do Sa'd, Layth, and Jundu' command me,
When I have no pleasure in humility and abasement?

4. They say, "Use reason and be kind to your tribe,"
Yet they bid me to grief when evening comes.

5. So I swore I would not desist
Until I visit them with blows like the scowling famished.
