- أفي حدثان الدهر أم في قديمهWas it in time’s recent days or in its days of old
- ألا أبلغ أبا الجرباء عنيHear this: convey to Abu al-Jarba on my behalf
- ألسنا بفرع قد علمتم دعامةAre we not a branch that you knew to be supported
- ألم تر أن الحي فرق بينهمHave you not seen how the tribe were divided
- أمرت بني البرصاء يوم حزابةI commanded the sons of al-Barsa' on the day of Huzabah
- أنا ابن برصاء بها أجيبI am the son of Barṣāʾ; I answer to that name.
- تخرم الدهر إخواني وغادرنيTime has snatched away my brothers and left me behind,
- دَعانِيَ حِصنٌ لِلفِرارِ فَساءَنيHisn urged me to flee, and it distressed me
- دعيني أماجد في الحياة فإننيLet me vie for glory in life, for I
- سجنت لساني يا ابن حيان بعدماI restrained my tongue, O Ibn Ḥayyān, after
- قامت وأعلى خلقها في ثيابهاShe stood—and the upper part of her figure, within her garments,
- قلت لغلاق بعرنان ما ترىI said to Ghallāq at ʿArnān, “What do you see?”
- كأن ابنة العذري يوم بدت لناIt was as though al-ʿUdhrī’s daughter, the day she appeared to us,
- كأنها بدن واستيفارAs though they were coats of mail and istīfār,
- لعمري لقد أشرفت يوم عنيزةBy my life, on the day of ʿUnayzah I came close
- لعمري لئن كانت سهية أوضعتBy my life, if Suhayya has hastened
- لكن سهية تدري أنني رجلBut Suhayya knows that I am a man
- ماذا تلمس سلمى في معرسناWhat does Salma seek in our night camp?
- نفلق هام من لم تنله رماحناWe cleave the heads of those our spears have not reached,
- هل عند سعدى ابنة العمري من زادDoes Saʿdā, daughter of al-ʿAmrī, have any provisions?
- وأخلاف مكلثمة وتجرAnd the teats are rounded and drag along.
- وإني أكمن السر عندي وإن أتىAnd I conceal the secret within me, even if
- وإني لسهل الوجه يعرف مجلسيAnd I am indeed welcoming of face; my gathering place is known,
- وكانت كبرق شامت العين ضوءهAnd she was like lightning whose gleam the eye watched;
- ولقد وقفت النفس عن حاجاتهاAnd indeed, I restrained my soul from its desires,
- وللحق من مالي إذا هو ضافنيTruth deserves my wealth when it afflicts me
- وهم تأخذ النحواء منهAnd many a sorrow from which you catch the shivers,
- يدل علينا الجار آخر قبلهA neighbor is guided to us by another who came before him,
