وَالنَفسُand the soul حاضِرَةُgathered الشُعاعِthe impulses تَطَلَّعُyearns
وَالنَفسُ حاضِرَةُ الشُعاعِ تَطَلَّعُ
And indeed, I restrained my soul from its desires,
My soul I stopped from seeking needs,
while my soul, its impulses gathered, yearned for them.
my soul that radiates attentive gleams.
وَغَرِمتُand I incurred فيfor الحَسَبِhonor الرَفيعِlofty غَرامَةًan expense
وَغَرِمتُ في الحَسَبِ الرَفيعِ غَرامَةً

يَعيا بِها الحَصِرِ الشَحيحُ وَيَظلَعُ
And for lofty honor I bore an expense
And out of noble rank I nurtured love -
that exhausts the fainthearted miser and makes him limp.
the mean of spirit it deprives and deems!
إِنّيindeed I فَتىًa young man حُرٌnoble لِقَدرِيَof my worth عارِفٌaware
إِنّي فَتىً حُرٌ لِقَدرِيَ عارِفٌ
أُعطيI give بِهِin keeping with it وَعَليهِand for its sake مِمّاfrom what أَمنَعُI withhold
أُعطي بِهِ وَعَليهِ مِمّا أَمنَعُ
I am a noble young man, aware of my worth;
I'm but a freeborn youth who knows my worth:
in keeping with it, and for its sake, I give from what I deny myself.
for it I give and hold whate’er I deem.
