ماذاwhat تَلَمَّسُshe seeks سَلمىSalma فيin مُعَرَّسِناour night camp
كَرَّa return الغَريمُthe creditor لِدينِfor a debt كانَwas قَدalready وجَباdue
What does Salma seek in our night camp?
What does Salma perceive in our wedding bed?
Like a creditor returning for a debt already due,
The enemy repeatedly cursed the religion that was obligatory.
أَوor كَرِّa return صاحِبِthe companion of ذيone afflicted with الأَوجاعِpains مُسنِدِهِsupporting him
إِذاwhen تَأَوَّهَhe groans أَلقىhe casts فَوقَهُover him الهَبَباthe worn covering
Or a sufferer's companion returning to support him,
Or like the sigh of one in pain leaning on his friend
Who casts a worn covering over him whenever he groans.
When he moans, he throws the blankets off him.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَكُنshe was زَعَمَتshe claimed بِاللَهِby God مُسلِمَةًa Muslim woman
وَلَمand ... not تَكُنshe was هِيَshe مِمّاamong those who قَضَّتshe fulfilled الأَرَباthe longing
Had she not claimed, by God, to be a Muslim woman?
Did she not claim, by God, to be a Muslim?
And she was not one who had satisfied her longing.
Was she not one of those whom the times had passed by?
فَلاso ... not يَحِلُّis lawful لِسَلمىfor Salma أَنto تَؤَرقّناshe keeps us awake
بَعدَafter المَنامِsleep وَلَوand even if كُنّاwe were لَهاfor her نَصَباa target
So Salma may not lawfully keep us awake
It is not permissible for Salma to disturb us
After sleep, even if we were her target.
After sleep, even if we were erected for her.
