- الحمد لله الذيPraise be to God, who
- أودعكم وأودعكم حياتيI bid you farewell and entrust you with my life.
- حلت رميلة بالمتبع حلةRumaylah made her dwelling at al-Mutbaʿ,
- خليلي هبا طالما قد رقدتماMy two dear friends, awake! Long have you slept.
- في الذاهبين الأولينIn those who went before,
- قد كنت أسمع بالزمان ولا أرىI had heard of Time, but did not see
- كل يهماء يقصر الطرف عنهاEvery trackless waste that sight falls short of spanning—
- منع البقاء تقلب الشمسThe sun's changing course denies permanence,
- هاج للقلب من هواه ادكارRemembrance stirred in the heart from its longing;
- وتقي إذا مست مناسمها الحصىAnd when her hoof-pads touch the pebbles, she avoids
- ويخلف قوم خلافا لقومAnd one people succeeds another,
- يا ناعي الموت والملحود في جدثO herald of death and of the one laid in a grave—
