نَending of الأولين: the earlier ones مِنَof القُرونِthe generations لَناfor us بَصائِرlessons; insights
In those who went before,
of generations past, there are lessons for us.
لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُI saw مَوارِداًwatering places; approaches
لِلمَوتِfor death لَيسَthere are not لَهاfor them مَصادِرways of departure
When I saw watering places
of death, with no paths leading back from them,
وَرَأَيتُand I saw قَوميmy people نَحوَهاtoward them
تَمضيpass on الأَصاغِرُthe young وَالأَكابِرand the old
and saw my people toward them
passing on, the young and the old—
لاnot يَرجِعُreturns الماضيone who has departed وَلاand not
يَبقىremains مِنَof الباقينَthose remaining غابِرa survivor
no one who has departed returns, nor
does any of those remaining survive—
أَيقَنتُI became certain أَنّيthat I لاno مَحاstart of محالة (لا محالة: without fail)
لَةَend of محالة (لا محالة: without fail) حَيثُwhere صارَwent القَومُthe people صائِرbound to go
I became certain that I would, without
fail, go where the people had gone.
