خَليلَيَّmy two dear friends هُبّاawake, both of you طالَماfor so long قَدindeed رَقَدتُّماyou two have slept
أَجِدَّكُماare you two in earnest? لاnot تَقضِيانِyou two finish كَراكُماyour slumber, both of you
My two dear friends, awake! Long have you slept.
Truly, will you two never have done with sleep?
أَلَمdid not? تَعلَماyou two know أَنّيthat I بِسِمعانَin Simʿan مُفرَدٌalone
وَماand not لِيَfor me فيهاin it مِنany خَليلٍclose friend سِواكُماbesides you both
Did you two not know that I am alone in Simʿan,
And have no friend there besides you two?
أُقومُI stand عَلىover قَبرَيكُماyour two graves لَستُI am not بارِحاًdeparting
طِوالَthroughout اللَياليthe nights أَوuntil يُجيبَanswers صَداكُماthe echo of you both
I stand over your two graves, never departing,
Throughout the nights, until your echo answers.
جَرىflowed المَوتُdeath مِجرىalong the course of اللَحمِthe flesh وَالعَظمِand bone مِنكُماof you both
كَأَنَّas though الَّذيthe one who يِسقيserves العُقارَwine سَقاكُماgave you both drink
Death has flowed through the flesh and bone of you both,
As though the wine-server had given you both to drink.
تَحَمَّلَdeparted مَنthose who يَهمىrains down (unclear here) العُقولَminds وَغادَرواand they left behind
أَخاًa brother لَكُماto you both أَشجاهُsaddened him ماwhat قَدindeed شَجاكُماsaddened you both
Those who “rain down minds” [wording unclear] have departed and left
A brother of yours, saddened by what has saddened you both.
فَأَيُّthen what أَخٍbrother يَجفواforsakes أَخاًa brother بِعدَafter مَوتِهِhis death
فَلَستُfor I am not الَّذيthe one who مِنfrom بَعدِafter مَوتٍdeath جَفاكُماforsook you both
What brother, then, forsakes a brother after his death?
For I am not one who has forsaken you both after death.
أَصُبُّI pour عَلىupon قَبرَيكُماyour two graves مِنsome مُدامَةٍwine
فَإِلّاand if not تَنالاهاyou two partake of it تُرَوِّit will moisten جُثاكُماyour burial mounds
I pour some wine upon your two graves;
And if you cannot partake of it, it will moisten your burial mounds.
أُناديكُماI call you both كَيماso that تُجيباyou two answer وَتَنطِقاand you two speak
وَلَيسَand is not مُجاباًanswered مَوتُهُhis death مَنwhoever دَعاكُماcalls you both
I call you both, that you may answer and speak,
Yet whoever calls you both receives no answer [“his death” is unclear in the text].
كَأَنَّكُماas though you two وَالمَوتُand death أَقرَبُthe nearest غايَةٍend
بِروحِيَwith my soul فيin قَبرَيكُماyour two graves قَدalready أَتاكُماhas come to you both
It is as though you two behold—death is the nearest end—
My soul, already come to you in your two graves.
قَضَيتُI have concluded بِأَنّيthat I لاno مَحالَةَescape هالِكٌdoomed to perish
وَأَنّيand that I سَيَعرونيwill befall me الَّذيthat which قَدalready عَراكُماbefell you both
I have concluded that I shall inevitably perish,
And that what has befallen you both will befall me.
فَلَوso if جُعِلَتwere made نَفسٌa soul لِنَفسٍfor another soul وِقايَةًa shield
لَجُدتُّI would freely give بِنَفسيmy own soul أَنso that تَكونَit might be فِداكُماa ransom for you both
If one soul could be made a shield for another,
I would freely give my soul to ransom you both.
