- ذكرت الصغير وأشياعهI remembered al-Saghir and his followers;
- طال ليلي وغير الدهر حاليMy night has grown long, and time has changed my state,
- عجبت لأحداث البلاء وللدهرI wondered at the turns of fate and time
- قل للحصين لقد أصبت سعادةTell the valiant you have attained happiness,
- قولوا ليحيى يستعد كتيبةTell Yahya to ready a battalion
- لعمري لقد بعنا الحياة وعيشهاBy my life, we have sold life and its pleasures
- لعمري لقد قام الأصم بخطبةBy my life, al-Asamm has indeed risen to deliver a speech,
- ولفوك أشنع حين تنطق فاغراAnd indeed your mouth is uglier when you speak agape
- وما زالت الأقدار حتى قذفننيAnd the fates did not cease until they cast me
- ومسوم للموت يركب ردعهAnd one marked for death falls headlong
