My night has grown long, and time has changed my state,

and struck me with unerring arrows.

Qatari has sundered us for all time,

and assailed us with the Dajjal's trial.

And I see ʿAbd Rabbih has abandoned the

truth; so these two are in ruin and error.

They kindled it against the Shurat and said,

"ʿUbayda son of Hilal launched this."

    لَقَليلٌ في جَمعِهِم أَمثالي

    And by my life, it is not as those two claimed;

indeed, few in their host are like me.

Indeed, I am steadfast in the heat of

battle, discerning what I owe and what is mine.

Yet I did not cause it—God

knows—nor was my tether loosed in stubborn contention.

The eye rejoiced in the Shurat, and there came

upon the profaners no small quaking.

    And al-Muhallab vied—son of Abu

    Sufra—for death when men perished.

He stretched out his legs for the clash of

battle, and stretched out both hands for the spoils.

And my dependents lie cast aside in

Jiruft—may good be yours! How far my dependents are from me!

If al-Muhallab's hand reaches them in

battle as captives, then I do not care.

The old man is restrained from them by the gravity of the

matter, and by the fact that selling them is unlawful.

Indeed, one whose maternal uncle is al-Muhallab, among

people, inspires awe and has majestic might.
