لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed قامَrose الأَصَمُّal-Asamm بِخُطبَةٍwith a speech
لَهاbecause of it فيin صُدورِbreasts المُسلِمينَthe Muslims غَليلُburning resentment
By my life, al-Asamm has indeed risen to deliver a speech,
By my life! The deaf man has given a sermon
Which has stirred burning resentment in the Muslims' breasts.
That stirs gloom in the hearts of Muslims
لَعَمريby my life لَئِنif indeed أَعطَيتُI gave سُفيانَSufyan بيعَتيmy pledge of allegiance
وَفارَقتُand I abandoned دينيmy faith إِنَّنيindeed I am لَجَهولُsurely a fool
By my life, if I gave Sufyan my pledge of allegiance
By my life! If I gave allegiance to Sufyan
And abandoned my faith, I would surely be a fool.
And forsook my religion, I would be ignorant

To God I complain of what you see in our steeds:
To God I complain of what you see in our steeds
They stagger, emaciated, with little marrow in them.
Weakened by equal rationing, only a few
تَعاوَرَهاassailed them in turn القُذّافُthe catapults مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبٍside

The catapults have assailed them in turn from every side
Assailed by the archers from every side
At Qumis, until even their unruly ones became docile.
Until their vigor turned to frailty
فَإِنand if يَكُit be أَفناهاhas destroyed them الحِصارُthe siege فَرُبَّماthen often

And if the siege has destroyed them, many a time
If the siege should waste them away, then perhaps
A slain man has weltered in his blood among them—
Amidst them a precious martyr may fall
قَتيلٌa slain man عَزيزٌgrievous فيwithin العَشيرَةِthe clan فَقدُهُthe loss of him
يَوَدّونَthey wish لَوif only يَشرونَهُthey redeem him بِبَديلُwith a substitute
A slain man whose loss is grievous to the clan,
A dear loss to the clan, whose absence
Whom they wish they could redeem with a substitute.
They would ransom with any substitute
وَقَدand already كِدنَthey have nearly مِمّاfrom what أَنthat يُقَدنَthey are led مِنَbecause of الوَجىhoof-soreness

لَهُنَّthey have بِأَبوابِat the doors of القِبابِthe domed tents صَهيلُneighing
And sore hooves have nearly reduced them to being led;
And they were almost led by fervor
They neigh at the doors of the domed tents.
To neigh at the tent flaps with zeal
فَياso, O نَفسُsoul صَبراًpatience كُلُّall ماthat which حُمَّis decreed واقِعٌwill happen
وَلَيسَand there is not إِلىto ماwhat تَعلَمينَyou know سَبيلُa way
So, my soul, be patient: all that is decreed will come to pass.
So O soul, patience, all that is destined comes
And there is no way to what you know.
And there is no way to what you know

And rise to the fortress gates, then look
And rise to the keep's embrasures and look
At a trench where the siege is prolonged.
Upon a trench in which the siege is long
