- أنبئت والأيام ذات تجاربI was told, and days are full of experiences,
- تدارك فضلي الأنعمي ولم يكنAl-An‘ami received my bounty, though he was not
- جزعت ولم تجزع من الشيب مجزعاYou grieved, yet did not grieve duly at gray hair,
- سائل بني ثور فهل لاقاكمAsk the sons of Thawr: were you met
- فإن تغضب فلست المرء ترضىIf you grow angry, you are not a man to be appeased,
- قرب رباط الجون مني فإنهDraw the tie of passion closer to me, for
- وأدبر عمرو والفرار فضيحةAnd Amr turned his back, though flight is a disgrace,
- وأوصاني الحريم بعز جاريAnd al-Harim charged me to uphold my neighbor's honor.
- وحي زبيد يوم حابس قتلواAnd Zubayd's clan were slaughtered on the day of Habis.
- وربعي نحرت على ثلاثAnd many a spring-born camel calf, nursed by three she-camels, I slaughtered,
- يا راكبا بلغن ولا تدعنO rider, carry word, and do not pass over
- يا عمرو لو أبصرتنيO Amr, if you had seen me,
