If you grow angry, you are not a man to be appeased,

And I have known you only as one of Iyad.

Did what we did delight you, or does it distress you,

That morning at al-Ahramayn, toward al-Sawad?

Our army's mighty blow against Banu Zubayd—

It left them with the clan of Abu Nijad,

    تَرَكناهُم كَباقِيَةِ الرَمادِ

    And the clan of al-Mazini, Abu Kuʿayb;

We left them like the remnants of ashes.

Birds circle above them, and our force swept

    Against Khawlan with sharp spears.

So they fled then, and put within our reach

The fair-skinned, amiable women and the shy maidens.

Our army's spoils from every tribe:

Great herds of newly acquired and long-held stock,

And dark-lipped women like gazelles, borne pillion,

As though their eyes were leaking waterskins.
