- أبا حسن لما سبقت الى العلىO Abu Hasan, when you raced ahead toward the heights,
- أداري بضحكي عن هواك وربماI hide my love for you with laughter, and sometimes
- إن إمام الورى ليرفعنيIndeed, the leader of mankind lifts me,
- تزينك خلات من الله اربعFour virtues from God adorn you:
- قالت كأنك في الموتى فقلت لهاShe said, “You seem to be among the dead,” so I said to her:
- قل لمن يبرم المريض فلوعدتTell the one who vexes the sick: if you visited
- كأنك بالمصرع الكائنIt is as though you were at the death that awaits,
- لك ود قد جبرناهYours is a friendship we have already mended,
- مات المبرد وانقضت ايامهAl-Mubarrad has died, and his days have ended.
- نم فقد وكلت بي الأرقا لاهياSleep, for you have set sleeplessness over me,
- ولما انتهينا للخيال الذي سرىAnd when we reached the apparition that had come by night,
- يا حسرتي بسعيد منذ فارقنيO my grief for Sa'id since he parted from me!
- يا رب بيت ربهAh, many a house whose master
- يا هر بعت الحق بالباطلO cat, you sold truth for falsehood,
- يا هر فارقتنا ولم تعدO cat, you left us and did not return.
- يتلقى الندى بوجه حييHe meets generosity with a bashful face,
