مات المبرد وانقضت ايامه

وليذهبن مع المبرد ثعلب

وليذهبن مع المبرد ثعلب

Al-Mubarrad has died, and his days have ended.

The Mubrid has died, his days have passed

And Thaʿlab will surely depart with al-Mubarrad.

And let Tha'lab go along with Al-Mubrid

بيت من الآداب اصبح نصفه

بيت من الآداب اصبح نصفه

خرباً وباقي النصف منه سيخرب

خرباً وباقي النصف منه سيخرب

A house of letters—half of it has become

A house of literature has become half

a ruin, and its remaining half will fall to ruin.

Ruined, and the other half will be ruined

فابكوا لما سلب الزمان ووطنوا

فابكوا لما سلب الزمان ووطنوا

للدهر انفسكم على ما يسلب

للدهر انفسكم على ما يسلب

So weep for what Time has taken, and prepare

So weep for what time has taken away and blame

yourselves for what Time will take away.

Yourselves for what it takes away

غاب المبرد حيث لا ترجونه

غاب المبرد حيث لا ترجونه

أبدا ومن ترجونه فمغيب

أبدا ومن ترجونه فمغيب

Al-Mubarrad has vanished where you cannot hope to see him

Al-Mubrid is gone where you do not hope for him

ever again; and he whom you hope to see will also be taken away.

Ever, and he whom you hope for is gone

شملتكم ايدي الردى بمصيبة

شملتكم ايدي الردى بمصيبة

وتوعدت بمصيبة تترقب

وتوعدت بمصيبة تترقب

The hands of death have overwhelmed you with a calamity,

The hands of misery have encompassed you all with a calamity

and have threatened another calamity that is awaited.

And threatened you with a calamity that is expected

فتزودوا من ثعلب فبكأس ما

فتزودوا من ثعلب فبكأس ما

شرب المبرد عن قليل يشرب

شرب المبرد عن قليل يشرب

So take provisions from Thaʿlab, for from the cup

So take provision from Tha'lab, for with a cup of what

al-Mubarrad drank from, he too will drink before long.

Al-Mubrid drank, before long he will drink

واستحلبوا الفاظه فكأنكم

واستحلبوا الفاظه فكأنكم

بسريره وعليه جمع ينحب

بسريره وعليه جمع ينحب

And milk his words, for it is as though you were

And milk his words, as if you are

at his bier, with a crowd wailing over him.

At his deathbed, and a group is weeping over him

وارى لكم ان تكتبوا انفاسه

وارى لكم ان تكتبوا انفاسه

ان كانت الانفاس مما تكتب

ان كانت الانفاس مما تكتب

And I think you ought to write down his breaths,

And I see for you to write down his breaths

if breaths are among the things that can be written down.

If breaths are among what can be written

فليلحقن بمن مضى متخلف

فليلحقن بمن مضى متخلف

من بعده ولذهبن ونذهب

من بعده ولذهبن ونذهب

For those who have passed on will surely be joined by one left behind

So let those who lag behind after him catch up with him

after him; he will surely depart, and we will depart.

And let them go, and we will go
