قالتshe said كأنكas though you فيamong الموتىthe dead فقلتso I said لهاto her
قالت كأنك في الموتى فقلت لها
قدindeed ماتhas died منone who ذهبتhave gone واللهby God عيناهhis two eyes
قد مات من ذهبت والله عيناه
She said, “You seem to be among the dead,” so I said to her:
She said you seem as one who's dead, I said
“Indeed, by God, whoever has lost his eyes has died.
He's dead whose sight has gone, by God his eyes!
عينايmy two eyes كفايmy two hands لاno طرفsight الذI delight بهin it
عيناي كفاي لا طرف الذ به
وكيفand how يفرحrejoices منone who عيناهhis two eyes كفاهhis two hands
وكيف يفرح من عيناه كفاه
My eyes are my hands; I have no sight to delight in.
My eyes suffice me, I've no need to see
And how can one rejoice whose eyes are his hands?”
What joy has he whose eyes no longer prize?
