Ah, many a house whose master
O Lord, in a home
found his dwelling there cramped
Distress has settled,
لماwhen تكاثرmultiplied فأرهits mice
لما تكاثر فأره
وجفاهand forsook him بعدafter الوصلcompanionship هرهhis cat
وجفاه بعد الوصل هره
when its mice multiplied
When its mice multiplied
and his cat forsook him after companionship.
And abandoned it after union.
وسعىand it hastened الىto برجdovecote امريءa man
وسعى الى برج امريء
فيهin it اللفراخthe chicks كماjust as يسرهdelights it
فيه اللفراخ كما يسره
And it hastened to a man's dovecote,
It headed to Amri's tower
where the chicks were, to its delight.
With chicks as he wished.
ظنit thought المنافعthe benefits اكلهاeating them
ظن المنافع اكلها
فاذاbut behold منافعهاtheir benefits تضرهharm it
فاذا منافعها تضره
It thought eating them would bring benefits,
He thought he would eat the benefits
only to find their benefits harming it.
But instead the benefits harmed him.
