يا عجبا ودهرنا عجائب

Oh wonder of wonders is our world

يا آل ذبيان ذودوا عن دمائكم

Roses are red, violets are blue

فإذا خمصتم قلتم يا عمنا

When you are frustrated, you say "O uncle!"

عوجا على منزل قد هاج أحزانا

I bitterly complained of the house where sorrows attacked me

تركنا بذي هاش أباك ولحمه

We left your father at Dhi Hashim, his flesh

لبثنا طويلا ثم جاء بمذقة

We lingered long, and then he came with a taste

حموا عالجا إلا على من أطاعهم

Protect them only if they obey you

ولما بدت أعلام صبح بذي الغضا

When the morning's banners shone on Dhu al-Ghada

كأن أعينها من طول ما جشمت

As if her eyes from so much gazing

مررت على حدثي بزمان بعدما

I passed by my youth after

مررن على ماء الغمار فماؤه

They passed by the water of illusion, its water

فهيهات وصل من أميمة دونه

Alas! The one I yearn for is out of reach

يعيرني قومي المجاهل والخنا

My ignorant people reproach and slander me,

إذا ما اطلعنا من ثنية لفلف

When we emerge from the winding valley,

لقد رأيتك عريانا ومؤتزرا

I saw you naked and covered

إذا تخازرت وما بي من خزر

If I gather strength though frail I be,

عوجا نلم على أسماء في الثمد

I leaned on the names in the sands

أزميل اني ان أكن لك جازيا

My friend, if I have wronged you

تشكى قلوصي الي الوجى

My heart complains to the beloved

ألا أبلغ بني مروان عنا

Convey to the clan of Marwan from us

ألا حي ربعا باللديد المقابل

Behold a beloved quarter with opposing ruins

يقولون أبناء البعير وماله

ربطنا ديات للملوك سعى بها

رمتك فلم تشو الفؤاد جنوب

وأي الناس أخبث من هبلٍ

أجليت أهل البرك من أوطانهم

فلو أن ما نعطي من المال نبتغي

رأيت مخاضي أنكرت عبداتها

لحا اللَه فودي مسرف وابن عمه

وداوية نازعتها الليل زائرا

رأيت المرء تأكله الليالي

وكائن ترى من ذات بث وعولة

أعاذلتي ألا لا تعذلينا
