- أتت طيفا بعد المطالShe came as a phantom after delay,
- أجاد القطر من غاد وسارMay rain pour abundantly from morning and night-roving clouds,
- أجل المعلى من قداح سرورCast the Mu‘alla among the gaming arrows of joy;
- أحمل أنفاس النسيم صبابتيI entrust the breaths of the breeze with my longing,
- أودى الغرام بصب قاده وصباLove has undone a lovesick man, driving him into suffering;
- تبدى هلال السعد من مطلع النصرThe crescent of good fortune appeared where victory rises;
- ثواي به ما بي أسى وصبابةMy abode held what ailed me—sorrow and yearning;
- حق البراعة أن تلقي أزمتهاArtistry ought to surrender its reins,
- حيت رسومك جدة من دارHail to your traces, Jeddah, dwelling that you are;
- خط الجمال صفحتي خدهBeauty inscribed both pages of his cheeks,
- ساق يدير بمقلتيه علىEnglish translation unavailable
- فتح كمنبلج الصباح المسفرA victory like the breaking of radiant dawn,
- فكم علقت من أمل بدرجAnd how many a hope I have pinned on a scroll
- كذا فليكن مدرك للفخارSuch should be one who attains glory;
- كفي ملامك لات حين تصبريCease your reproach; this is no time for me to be patient.
- مقذف في الهوى مهجتي مسقميWhat hurls my soul into love and makes me ill
- هلال خر من أوج لتربA crescent fell from the zenith to the dust,
- وافاك فتح واضح الإقبالA victory has come to you, plainly auspicious,
- وأهيف زانه شكل وقدAnd a slender-waisted youth, graced with fine looks and stature—
- يا أيها الرشأ الأغن الأهيفO you sweet-voiced, slender-waisted young gazelle!
- يا حسن تمر جال فيHow lovely—a date that roamed through
