    وَلاحَت بُروقُ المَجدِ مِن عَلَمِ الفَخرِ

    The crescent of good fortune appeared where victory rises;

And glory's lightning flashed from pride's banner.

Such ambitions, before which the Pleiades have become dust,

And such an army, led by victory's scout!

The kings of the earth stand before his onslaughts

As weak birds stand before the falcon's talon.

Their eyes are fixed upon his majesty,

They fall upon their chins beneath the hand of subjugation.

Whoever is not reached by a battalion of his armored warriors,

A battalion of terror has descended upon him ahead of it.

Unless they offer submission, there is no abode

For them but a wild beast's belly or a bird's crop.

And they are left slain in every wilderness,

Drunk on cups of death, not wine.

How often his sword of vengeance has blunted the Romans' edge,

And a specter of slaughter and captivity has swept over them!

And how often the champions in the thick of battle were clothed

In crimson tunics woven by straightened, tawny spears.

So every graceful, tender maiden wailed for them,

Shedding over them streaming crimson tears.

So did the Black people's endeavor fail, or did their judgment falter?

And did they, as they claimed, resist the tempest of coercion?

For a while they grazed in tranquil ease, and neglected

The consequences of what time's night-visitor brings.

Nothing startled them but an army's vanguard,

Urging on the forest's lions, their claws bloodstained.

A dust-cloud hangs over them; night testifies that it

Is night, with spears within it shining like stars.

And sleek steeds, like flocks of sandgrouse, lean-bellied,

Reach the utmost goal, even were it the eagle's peak.

They are girded with trailing coats of mail, as though they

Were linked all around from drops of rain.

How many a banner has shaded them, as though it were

An eagle's flight-feathers, folded against its wing.

Al-Mansur directs them; they are clouds

Raining death on the foe from their copious downpour.

    فَناهيكَ مِنهُ قابِلَ التَوبِ وَالعُذرِ

    There is no refuge from his might but his forbearance;

How excellent he is at accepting repentance and excuses!

And how cheerful his brow, as though

The full moon's radiance had been borrowed from its lines.

Along with a character whose fragrance, if perfume possessed it,

Fragrant perfume would not be attributed to al-Shihr.

Such is a Mahdian, Alid character,

Inherited by illustrious nobles from illustrious forebears.

Al-Mahdi's eye is gladdened by you, and before him the

Appointed Successor, for the good renown you have left behind,

Through one who, had he struck at Siffin on his battle-day,

A back-breaking calamity would have befallen the army of al-Sham.

    سَيُنتَظَمُ السوسُ القَصيُّ إِلى النَهرِ

    May dominion over the earth, secured for him, bring him joy;

Far-off al-Sus will be joined to the river.

The road to al-Sham is but a turn of the head away,

And Baghdad of Iraq lies but a thumb-to-forefinger span away.

If the enemies seek the shelter it affords

Through remoteness, then they have sought the impossible.

Even if they took the two Simak stars for their dwelling,

Death would always follow behind them through the night.

And if he confronted the encircling ocean with a single resolve,

The sea's deep waters would thereafter become a wasteland.

    فَناهيكَ مِن إرثٍ وَناهيكَ مِن نَجرِ

    The best of all creation is your ancestral stock, which you inherited;

What an inheritance is yours, and what a lineage!

May you ever remain triumphant, with a victorious banner,

And may the days remain bright with gladness through you.

No blessing is obtained except from you,

And no kindness flows but from the bounty of your hand.
