- أبا محمد المحمود يا حسنO praised Abū Muḥammad, O you of splendid
- أبعين مفتقر إليك رايتنيDid you look upon me as one in need of you,
- إذا ما علا في الصدر والنهى والأمرWhenever he rises to the foremost rank, wielding prohibition and command,
- أذل فيا حبذا من مدلI abase myself—oh, how dear is the one who abases me,
- أسعد بمولود أتاك مباركاRejoice in a birth that came to you blessed,
- اسمع حديثي تسمع قصة عجباListen to my tale, and you will hear a wondrous story.
- الحمد لله على ما أرى منPraise be to God for what I see
- الدهر يلعب بالفتى فيهيضهTime toys with the young man, breaking him
- بت وبات الحبيب ندمانيI spent the night, and my beloved was my drinking companion,
- تأوب عيني طيف ألمA passing phantom revisited my eyes by night,
- تصارمت الأجفان لما صرمتنيMy eyelids parted ways when you abandoned me;
- حضرتكم دهرا وفي الكم تحفهI came to you for an age, with a gift tucked in my sleeve,
- خطب طرقت به أمر طروقA calamity visited me—the bitterest night visitation,
- خلائق كالحدائق طاب منهاCharacter traits like gardens, whose breeze is sweet,
- طازاد مشتق من الطيز“Ṭāzād” is derived from “arse.”
- عجبت لما بلغت عني باطلاI marvel at the falsehood you were told about me;
- فداؤك نفسي من الحادثاتMy soul would ransom you from calamities,
- كأنه التيس قد أودى به هرمAs though he were a billy goat whom old age had done in—
- لست صدرا ولا قرأت على صدرYou are no leading scholar, nor have you studied under a leading
- مالك موفور فما بالهYour wealth is abundant; why, then, has it
- مرت بنا في الدير خمصانةA slender-waisted woman passed us in the monastery,
- وإذا رأيت فتى بأعلى رتبةAnd whenever I see a young man at the highest rank,
- والبدر يزهر في السماء كأنهAnd the full moon gleams in the sky, as though it were
- وبكر شربناها على الورد بكرةAnd virgin wine we drank among the roses at dawn;
- وسلاف كالتبر أذكى من المسكAnd choice wine, like gold, more fragrant than mu—
- ولما انتجعنا لائذين بظلهWhen we sought his favor, taking refuge in his shade,
- يا أيها القاضي السني الذكرO judge of radiant renown,
- يا سماء اسقطي ويا أرض ميديO sky, fall! And O earth, quake!
- يا فرحة الهم بعد اليأس من فرجO joy amid sorrow, after despair of relief!
- يا لحدب الظهور فصع الرقابO hump-backed, crook-necked creatures,
- يا من أظل بباب دارهO you at whose door I linger,
