The silence of the mute is better misguidance

إذا استقفلت يوماً على سر صاحب

If one day you stumble upon a friend's secret

عنت واعدتني الليالي فلا أرى

You promised me nights, yet I see no joy

تهادى رجال إن مرضت بشارة

Men parade if Bishara falls ill,

My thoughts wonder, how are you tonight

ولن يستطيع الدهر تغيير خلقه

Time cannot change one's nature,

لا خير في الهزل فاتركه لطالبه

No good in play, so leave it be

وبينا ترى السلطان بين مواكب

While you see the sultan among processions

وللصمت خير على عيه

Silence is better for the wise

أعاذل ليت البحر خمر وليتني

I wish the sea were wine, and I wish I were

تخالهم صماً عن الجهل والخنا

Imagine them deaf to ignorance and malice

ويا سقياً لسطحٍ أشـ

O water-bearer of a roof I leaned out from among them take me

وهون وجدي أني سوف أغتدي

And here I found that I will be delighted

والمرء تلقاه مضياعاً لفرصته

A man encounters misfortune that leads him astray

ولقد عرفت القائلين وقولهم

I have known the speakers and their words,

واصبر لما جشمت من جشب

Be patient for what you felt from devastation

ولما رأيت الشيب لاح بياضه

When I saw the white of aging appear,

إذا كدرت عليك أمور ورد

When troubles gather round and vex your head

ذهب الشباب فما له مردود

Youth has departed, never to return,

وصاحبين أذاع الدهر بينهما

Two friends whom fate has torn apart,

وإذا تخيرت الرجال لصحبة

When choosing companions of high moral worth

فإن يك هذا الشيب جاء وأصبحت

When this gray hair appeared and its

إن شيب الرأس بعد الشباب

The graying of the head after youth

في كل عيش غضارة أود

In all life are thorns I dislike,

قد غنينا وما يفرعنا الدهر

We have sung, though fate did not favor us,

أعجل ما عنيد إن كنت فاعلا

Hasten, O stubborn one, if you're going to act

إذا أنت خونت الأمين بظنة

If you betray the trustworthy out of suspicion

وما الدهر إلا دولتان فدولة

Time is but two conditions that keep alternating,

لقد جاورت بغداذا

I dwelled in Baghdad,

إذا المرء لم يسعد على الدهر جده

If a man does not find fortune in this life

أقول لذي طرب ضاحك

I say to the one with joyful mirth -

أمن قلوص عدت لم يؤذها أحد

مددت يدي ولم أعلم

عندي نبيذ معسل

وإذا أرادك بالوصال مباعد

واعلم بأن العلم ينفع من

هلم اسقني كأساً ودع عنك من أبي

الصمت خير للفتى

وسوء ظنك بالأدنين داعية

حلفت برب العيس تهدي بركبها

لا تجزعن متى اتكلت على الذي

لا تطلبن مودة بشفاعة

لا تقربن فكاهة في محفل

نعى ناعياً عمرو بليل فأسمعا

كلما شئت لقيت امرءا

دع التصابي فإن الشيب قد لاحا
