- أحارث بن عمر وقد وليت ولايةO Harith son of Umar, now that you have assumed a governorship,
- إذا رضيت عني كرام عشيرتيIf the noble members of my clan are pleased with me,

- ألم تعلمي يا عمرك الله أننيDid you not know, oh life of mine, that God knows
- فلا تعتذر بالشغل عنا فإنماSo do not plead work as an excuse for staying away from us, for
- قل للخليفة يا ابن عم محمدTell the caliph: O cousin of Muhammad,
- لعمري لئن كانت نواكم تباعدتBy my life, if your remoteness has grown greater,
- لله درك أي جنة خائفGod bless you! What a shield for one afraid,
- من كان يملك درهمين تعلمتWhoever owned two dirhams—well schooled were
- وإذا تكون كريهة أدعى لهاAnd when a hardship arises, I am summoned to it.
- وشاطرة لما رأتني تنكرتAnd when a saucy young woman saw me, she acted as though she did not know me;
- وما كيس في الناس يحمد رأيهAnd no shrewd man among people, whose judgment is praised,
- يا بدر ليل توسط الفلكاO full moon of night, poised at the center of heaven’s sphere,
