يَاO بَدْرَfull moon لَيْلٍof a night تَوَسَّطَoccupied the center of الفَلَكاthe celestial sphere
ذِكْرُكَyour remembrance فيin القَلْبِthe heart حَيْثماwherever سَلكاit traveled
O full moon of night, poised at the center of heaven’s sphere,
O full moon of night, centered in the celestial sphere,
the thought of you dwells in my heart wherever it may go.
Your memory is in my heart wherever it wanders.
إِنْif تَكُyou are عنaway from ناظريmy sight نَأَيْتَyou went far away فَقَدْthen indeed
تَرَكْتَyou left عَقْليmy mind عَلَيْكَover you مُشْتَرَكاshared; divided
Though you have gone far from my sight—
If you have gone far from my sight, then indeed
you have left my mind distraught over you.
You have left my mind divided over you.
أَسْلَمْتُI surrendered عَيْنَيَّmy two eyes لِلْسُّهادِto sleeplessness كماjust as
أَسْلَمَsurrendered جَفْنيmy eyelid عليكَfor you ماwhat مَلَكاit possessed
I consigned my eyes to sleeplessness, just as
I surrendered my eyes to sleeplessness, just as
my eyelid, for your sake, yielded all it possessed.
My eyelid yielded, for you, all it held.
ماnot كُنْتُI was أَرْجوI hope for السُّلُوَّsolace مِنْfrom سَنَنِthe course of
الدَّمْعَةِa tear إِلاَّexcept لِشانىءٍfor a hater فَبَكَىso he wept
I had never hoped for release from love in the course
I never hoped for solace from the course
of a tear—except an enemy’s; and he wept.
Of a tear, save for a hater—and he wept.
وَلاand not بَداappeared ليto me شَيءٌa thing سُرِرْتُI was delighted بِهِby it
بَعْدَكَafter you إِلاّضexcept (final ض unclear) نَظَرْتُI considered ليfor me وَلَكاand for you
Nor, after you, did anything appear that gladdened me
And nothing that delighted me appeared to me
without my seeing it as ours—mine and yours.
After you, without my taking thought for myself and for you.
