أَحَارثO Harith بْنُson of عُمَرٍUmar وَقَدْand now that ولِيتَyou have assumed ولايةًa governorship
أَحَارث بْنُ عُمَرٍ وَقَدْ ولِيتَ ولايةً
فَكُنْso be جِرْذاًa rat فِيهاin it تَخُونُyou betray trust وَتَسْرِقُand you steal
فَكُنْ جِرْذاً فِيها تَخُونُ وَتَسْرِقُ
O Harith son of Umar, now that you have assumed a governorship,
be a rat in it, betraying trust and stealing.
وَبَاهَand vie in boasting with تَمِيماًTamim بِالْغِنَىin wealth إِنَّindeed لِلْغِنىfor wealth
وَبَاهَ تَمِيماً بِالْغِنَى إِنَّ لِلْغِنى
لِسَاناًa tongue بِهِwith it المَرْءُthe man الهَيُوبَةَtimid يَنْطِقُspeaks
لِسَاناً بِهِ المَرْءُ الهَيُوبَةَ يَنْطِقُ
And vie with Tamim in boasting of wealth, for wealth has
a tongue with which the timid man speaks.
