- أحبابنا ما زال داعي النوىOur beloved ones, the herald of separation still
- أراكم فأعرض عنكم وبيI see you, then turn away from you, though within me
- أزوركم فتكاد الأرض تقبض بيI visit you, and the earth almost closes in around me
- تذكرنيك الريح مرت عليلةThe wind reminds me of you; it passed languidly
- حيا الحيا وطناً بإربل دارساًMay the rain greet a ruined dwelling in Erbil,
- رماني الدهر بالنكبات حتىTime hurled calamities at me until
- روحي فداك أغن مقتبل الصباMy soul be your ransom, O sweet-voiced one in the prime of youth.
- كل يوم لنا من الدهر خطبEvery day, fate brings us a calamity.
- لا تتعرض لنا فإن لناDo not venture against us—for we possess
- لا تخدعنك سمرة غرارةDo not let a deceitful brown woman deceive you
- وافى كتابك يا مولاي مشتملاًYour letter arrived, my lord, containing
- وإني ليدعوني السلو فأنثنيSolitude calls me, so I bend,
- وأهيف كالبدر لما استتمAnd a slender-waisted youth, like the full moon on completing
- وبتنا جميعاً وبات الغيورAnd we spent the night together, while the jealous man spent his night
- وعيشك ما طرفي الكليل بناظرٍBy your life, my weary eye does not gaze
- وفى لي دمعي يوم بانوا بوعدهThey were true to their promise one day when they left
- يا جور هذا الدهر من ظالمOh, the injustice of this age—what a tyrant,
- يا رب أنت الله حلمك صافحO Lord, You are God; Your forbearance is forgiving
- يا ليلة حتى الصباح سهرتهاO night I spent awake until dawn,
- يا من تجنى ظالماًO you who wronged me unjustly,
