1. How excellent is the water from a fleeing gazelle when it springs away,
And how excellent is the water from a waving branch when it sways.
١. يا حَبَّذا مَيُّ من ظبيٍ اذا نَفَرت
وَحَبَّذا ميُّ من غصنٍ اذا خطرت
2. And how excellent is her radiant face on which
Signs for lovers have been written and lined.
٢. وَحبذا وجهها الباهي الَّذي كُتِبت
فيهِ رموزٌ لاهل العشق قد سُطرت
3. And how excellent are her soft cheeks and rosebuds
When they glow in the meadow of life and blossom.
٣. وَحبذا خدّها القاني ووردتهُ
اذا ذوى في روض الحيا نضرت
4. O rose, whenever the thirst intensifies in it
From the fire of beauty it kindles on her cheek and flourishes.
٤. يا وردةً كلما اشتدَّ الظمآءُ بها
من نار حسنٍ ذكت في خدّها ازدهرت
5. How can I find peace when my soul, whenever content
With it, the commander of passions comes and commands.
٥. كَيفَ السلوَّ وَنَفسي كلما قنعت
بِهِ اتى آمرُ الاشواق فائتمرت
6. And whenever my gaze tries to love another,
It is forbidden by the warner of tears that flowed in passion.
٦. وكلما رام طَرفي ان يُحبَّ سوىً
نَهاهُ ناهي دموعٍ في الغَرام جرت
7. If in nearness I long for you, will you ever
Be without longing, for separation you were created?
٧. ان كنتُ في القرب مشتاقاً اليكِ تُرى
مَتى تَكون بلا شوقٍ حَشاً فُطرت
8. Alas! No lover is ever far from his beloved
Except when she is veiled from him and not traveled.
٨. هَيهاتِ ما بُعد صبٍّ عن حبيبتهِ
الّا اذ احتجبت عنهُ وَما سَفرت
