1. Tears fall on your soil, O tender withering branch,
Alas! Tears cannot quench the burning anguish for you,

2. Nor can pouring rainclouds,
A sadness that melts bodies out of grief,

3. For from eyes here are ever-flowing tears.
O branch leaning aslant, the morning breeze tilted you,

4. So every leaning branch now grieves for you.
God is Greatest! What a terrible calamity!

5. In it the evilest of harms was inflicted.
The deaf heard its wailing,

6. And the blind was guided by its echoes.
If time takes pride in one calamity,

7. In this it has vast, all-encompassing pride.
Tears mingled with blood poured down,

8. As did lamentations and first wailings.
On the morn of a darkened day, though its sun had set

9. The darkness would not have increased.
A day when hearts were severed, as though

10. Their constant flowing tears cut them to pieces.
O traveler who took hearts as pledges

11. And was loyal to them, his only misdeed.
You frightened a land you brought comfort to,

12. After you left it was not guarded by a protector.
Your loss saddened hearts as though

13. Within people’s hearts you have homes.
Your family named you Safe, hopefully,

14. While fate cries out you were unlucky, O hopeful one!
Efforts were to no avail,

15. As death’s means overcame their means.
When fate wants something done to a man,

16. All your efforts and striving are fruitless.
Many a wise grandchild dies of it,

17. While in it remains an ignorant grandfather.
May God guard you, O traveler,

18. Whose bier the hearts are, and mourners.
You made your life a ladder,

19. Seeking to rise in the world, and you struggled,
But it joined with another in the above,

20. From where you reached your Lord, and met Him.
You attained in the bloom of youth what

21. Time imagined your life had fulfilled.
It is as though I see time biting its fingertips,

22. Regretting and saddened by what it had done.
It suffices the victim, so immense was his tragedy,

23. That even his killer would mourn him.
You were like a mature, experienced elder,

24. Excelling in mind above all who seek.
That knowledge and learning entirely -

25. Alas! It vanished, all transient.
Vanished, but leaving the worst remembrance,

26. Every limb fighting against it.
Since childhood you did not weary

27. Of striving for it, nor did any obstacle bar you,
And in a few years you reached

28. A level few gaining knowledge attain.
It claimed your body wherever you went,

29. And the field of action lost its worker.
You journeyed at twenty, leaving behind sorrow

30. That cannot be measured however long.
A branch was expected to bear fruit,

31. But destiny hurried it to ripen early.
I guess when that happened it turned its face

32. Lest it show pity for what would soon occur.
Never had he needed a teacher’s care -

33. Far from it! Nor did fingers toil over him.
Upright from his earliest days, intelligent and wise,

34. A poet, rational, composed.
Clinging to religion’s bond, robed

35. In the garment of righteousness and praised qualities.
He bore afflictions but never knew weariness,

36. Nor did worldly cares distract him from fearing God.
His mounts were piety and his company

37. Remembrance of God. Thus he gained what he hoped for,
In a Paradise where no ending led

38. Him, which first efforts cannot bring.
